DISCOGRAPHY
We are working our way through a planned series of albums. We’ll be releasing a video (eventually) that explains the whole thing.
We began this journey in 2006 and hope to finish in 2032. Thanks so much for listening! Let us know what you think of this whole mess.
NIGHTMARES IN TECHNICOLOR
2024. Album No. 7.
‘Nightmares in Technicolor’ is the 7th Johnny Stranger album. Imagined as a horror/sci-fi story, this album was written during a really dark time for me personally. This record is dedicated to the memory of my dad, Bruce Anthony Ewen.
MECHANICAL CLOUDS
2022. Album No. 6.
'Mechanical Clouds' is the 6th Johnny Stranger album. This record was written over 10 years prior, when I was living in Boston. I wrote these songs while wandering around the city. To me, this is my Boston record. But it's also an album about loss and perseverance.
Valkyrie
2020. Album No. 5.
'Valkyrie' is the 5th Johnny Stranger record. It was also our return record, after a 10-year hiatus. These songs were written in many places but were all tied by themes of dogma and religiosity.
ILIAD & ODYSSEY
2010. Album No. 4.
'Iliad & Odyssey' is the 4th Johnny Stranger record. Recorded out in Westborough, MA at Emery Farms. My partner Blake Buckalew and I recorded this with love and without a whole lot of equipment but with a lot of love. The album walks through the events of the Homeric Epics and ties them to my experiences living in Boston.
GALACTICUS 9
2009. Album No. 3.
'Galacticus 9' is the 3rd Johnny Stranger album. I moved to Boston in 2008, following a couple exciting years of doing Johnny Stranger in Washington State. Within the first couple weeks of my move, the concept for Galacticus 9 popped into my head, inspired by cheesy 50s Sci-Fi flicks.
LUCID
2007. Album No. 2.
'Lucid' was a our sophomore record and encompasses a whole lot of growth. We were operating as a three-piece then and we played a ton of shows around WA and just generally had a great time. This record - while perhaps a bit slapdash - still (to me) showcases the breadth of the Johnny sound that we continue to investigate.
JOHNNY STRANGER
2006. Album No. 1.
'Johnny Stranger' began as an experimental project. Growing up, I spent all my waking hours recording on my dad's ADAT machine and teaching myself to make rock albums. During my senior year of college, I was captivated by Steely Dan and the songwriting of Leiber & Stoller. This curiosity led to the first Johnny Stranger album... a sarcastic romp through a jazzier side of my songwriting.
EXTRAS
THE NUTCRACKER - EP
2020.
The Nutcracker' EP was an awesome challenge I undertook just after finishing 'Valkyire'. It was an old idea I had... when I was 14 years old, I tracked an EP of these Tchaikovsky classics but I did it only as well as I could at the time. I thought it would be a lot of fun to revisit this idea and do it better. So I picked up a copy of the score and stayed as faithful as I could.
THE CUSP KID MEDLEY
B-SIDE COLLECTION (2006 - 2010)
The Cusp Kid Medley is a collection of tunes from the early, foundational years of JS. I included our B-Sides and a couple sloppy demos that felt like they were important at the time. The album cover is actually the poster from our first ever show.
